http://www.localcolorsart.com/Local_Colors/Catherine_Hostetter.html Catherine Darling Hostetter Biography Catherine was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her earliest memories of a love for art was stealing clay in kindergarten so she could play with it at home. Normally Catherine is a highly conscientious and honest person, but this act illustrates her passion for creativity—a love for art that overrode what she knew was right. When attending a parent-teacher conference, Catherine’s teacher told her mother that Catherine needed to quit doing her math in multi-colors (crayons). It was at this time that Catherine decided she had better “fess up” about the clay. Art continued to spill out through Catherine’s life, and she was always noted as the artist of the class. By the time she was a high school senior she was recognized as one of Utah’s top ten student artists through the Deseret News Sterling Scholar awards program. Don Olson, noted Utah abstract artist, was her mentor and teacher. Catherine continued her education at the University of Utah but marriage and motherhood took her in a new direction. Although she continued to dabble with her art through the raising of five children, it wasn’t until 14 years later that she would take it up again more seriously. She augmented her knowledge through workshops and classes but still would label herself as self taught. In June 2004, Catherine left an administrative assistant position to work as a full-time artist. She paints in watercolor, acrylics, and oils, and favors people or animals as subject matter. She also enjoys painting whimsical art as well as stylized realism. Her painting have been described as “happy” and as “making people feel good.” Catherine currently serves as president of the Utah Watercolor Society.
