Local Colors is sponsoring our first Utah High School Students Art Show in April. Our intention is to provide an opportunity for art students to learn about the process of submitting work for competition, preparing applications, having their work juried, preparing work for proper display, and how the gallery sales process works. This show should help encourage art students to become more excited about creating art and about entering their work into shows. This High School Art Show will be a yearly event to support art development in our community and to encourage up-and-coming amateurs in their pursuit of art. Local Colors will hold an Artist Reception and Awards Ceremony on April 14, 2011 from 6:00PM – 8:00PM for the students who are accepted to the show (awards announced at 7:00PM) . This is the evening before the April Salt Lake Gallery Stroll. Student work will be displayed, with awards, for the Gallery Stroll patrons to see the next evening. For details see the PDF links below or email callforentries@localcolorsart.com. See our letter to art department instructors and our PDF format application.

Update: See the student's entries via slideshow or galleries. The winners are also posted in the gallery section. Great job by all students!

Students submitted their work via digital image entry in each of the three categories. The images were judged by a panel of artists from Local Colors of Utah Gallery. Each entry was given a score based on technical execution as well as overall artistic merit.  The scores from each judge were then tallied and the highest scoring works were selected for inclusion in the show.  Competition was strong, with only 21 points separating the highest and lowest scoring 2D entries, and only a three point difference in the top seven entries.

"We wanted to find a way to give back to the community and, at the same time, encourage young artists to keep developing their artistic talents and skills." said Local Colors co-op President and Artist, Catherine Darling Hostetter.

"As a gallery, we also wanted to find a way to support art programs in Utah schools, which tend to struggle during difficult economic times. By hosting this show, featuring the work of Utah's High School students, we are hoping to remind the community that artistic talent is alive and well in our youth. Their creative development is just as important as academic development and should be encouraged. We also wanted to help students learn the process for submitting their work to shows and competitions; from preparation of the images for the jury process to framing and preparing their work for proper display. We hope this will be a good learning experience for the students because art shows and competitions are important way for an artist to get their work out into the community. This is our first event and we've had great response. We plan to make it an annual event and hope to continue to encourage Utah students in their creative pursuits."
